Working downtown for the last 5 years, I've become fairly tired of eating the same old things over and over. I've decided that I'm going to venture out a little more on my noon hour and see what is hiding in the nook and crannies of Calgary's downtown. That is how I stumbled upon THI THI.
Down from Chicago Chophouse and on the same block as The Globe movie theater, I walked by this place the other day. There was a line up out the door so I had to try it out. I love Vietnamese food in general and enjoyed the Vietnamese subs I've had in the past The last time I had one was quite a few years at the old Elbow River Casino, so at 2am playing poker, anything might taste good. I was anxious to try one again
They had a number of choices from rib, Vietnamese sausage and cold cuts to sate beef and chicken, As a typical Caucasian, I choose the chicken and beef sate. In fact, it was called the "Super Combo" ($7.50)
Now, when I think of something, especially when it comes to food, as "Super", I assume it is huge and overflowing. I was actually pretty disappointed with the size. The photo menu shows the meat flowing out of the sandwich. In reality, that wasn't the case.
As far as the taste and flavor, everything was bang on. Cucumber, onion, carrots, special sauce, cilantro and two hot peppers and you are ready to go. It is a very fresh tasting sandwich. The bun was pretty standard whole wheat bun, not a traditional baguette like I've had before, but good enough and it has a good bite being toasted.
The staff was great, very efficient. They burn through the long lunch lineups in no time. Seating is limited so get there early if you want to dine in. Also, bring cash. No debit although they do have a ATM if you love service fees They do have a loyalty type program if you bring your receipt back next visit within 7 days you get a discount on your sub or a free pop.
I think I might make THI THI a regular stop on my lunch rotation. Great quick lunchtime service and a fresh change from the everyday norm. I can't wait to see what my next lunchtime stroll brings me.
